There will always be more products in our database than the official databases have.
We also source data from more than 40 countries as wholesalers, suppliers and retailers source products direct nowadays.
Whilst we use GS1 to source our data, this relies on suppliers loading their product data into GS1 systems.
A supplier will be issued a series of barcode numbers that associate all products using those numbers to the supplier, but if the supplier does not advise GS1 what products are using each number then that information is not available for us.
With our systems, if a product is not on file, we have processes that will at least determine the registered supplier of the product.
If you scan a product that we do not have, this creates the basic starting information in our system with a new supplier and a new barcode.
Sometimes, we will draw a blank and have nothing, such is the systems that we communicate with. In this instance we record the barcode and investigate why our systems do not find anything. Our systems strive for constant improvement.
Suppliers are responsible for entering and sharing their data through official platforms.
Some suppliers do not enter all of this information into the platform, we will be working with these suppliers to provide more information to the platform and this will flow through to our database and give all users more useful information.
The short answer is… yes.
As part of creating Bring Back Australia, we have developed dynamic systems that automatically invite new suppliers to the platform.
The suppliers will be shown the data that we have on file for their products and guided through the process of sharing their data formally through the GS1 platform.
Suppliers will also be able to update some information directly into our platform.

Looking for barcodes starting with “93” does not mean that the product is made in Australia.
Where numbers start with 93, this only means that the company has been issued a series of numbers by GS1 Australia.
Numbers starting with 93 designate that the numbers were issued in Australia but the company can still be a foreign company, this has been a misconception for a long time and with more and more companies off-shoring production, they can still use the same numbers.
The best way to know the true origins and ownership of the brands is to use the Buy Back Australia app.
